This week, we travel into the shimmer in Annihilation!

In this episode of ‘13 Degrees of Screams,’ hosts Alex and Stephanie discuss ‘Annihilation’ a 2018 science fiction horror thriller film written and directed by Alex Garland; loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer. The story follows a group of scientists who enter the Shimmer, a mysterious quarantined zone of mutating plants and animals caused by an alien presence.

Alex and Stephanie share their intrigue and theories revolving around the Shimmer, noting the environment’s otherworldly beauty and dangers, with an emphasis on the theme of self destruction and transformation. They explore key scenes, including those involving the bear fused with a woman’s voice, the video of a man’s abdomen being cut open to reveal writhing intestines, and the unique “transformations” that befall all who enter the Shimmer, leading to a thought provoking ending with some open ended questions to consider!
