Summary:

Huck and Tom go on continuing the plans to break Jim out of jail. Tom keeps complaining that the situation is too easy; they need to come up with the difficulties themselves. Tom says that they need a very basic light to make it seem more authentic, but they could probably use a lantern, and no one would notice, it just isn’t the “Right” way. He then says that they need to make a saw so that they can cut the bed of Jim’s bed off, even though they could just lift the bed off of the chain on Jim’s leg. Tom just wants to make the plan difficult for the “story.” Tom then suggests that Jim needs a rope latter because everyone else does, even though he would have no need for it. Huck is against it, but as he doesn’t know as much as Tom, he goes along with the idea. Tom gets very frustrated with Huck’s constant attempts to make the plan easier. 

Tom and Huck then conclude that they can steal anything they want provided that it will help Jim get out of jail. This is where Tom gets his idea to dig Jim out of the jail with little knives. Huck again protests, saying that it would take years for them to give him out and suggests that they could use the rusty tools in the shed. Tom just says it wouldn’t be proper…
