Description

All public policies -- indeed, all actions by humans -- have two kinds of effects: the effects that are intended, and visible; and unintended consequences, which are invisible. The Seen and the Unseen is a podcast that aims to examine both the seen and the unseen effects of our actions.
Presented by Amit Varma (a journalist for a decade-and-a-half, and winner of the prestigious Bastiat Prize for journalism in 2007 and 2015 -- the only person to win it twice), the show takes on a specific public policy in every episode, and dissects its seen and unseen effects. For example: the ban on surge pricing by Uber in Delhi. What is seen is that Uber no longer costs so much; what is unseen is that you cannot get an Uber at all, because of the scarcity that is a direct result of the price control. The host explains the economic reasoning at work, and talks to an expert who breaks it down further.
The host will have a panel of experts at his disposal, from a variety of disciplines, and will speak to a relevant expert in every episode. Subjects covered will range from broad ones like the state of education in India, to narrower ones like the banning of 'victimless crimes' like prostitution and gambling.

This comment is on episode # 151: Economy of India in 2019. The Shah Rukh of Economics of India says, so what if only 3% pays income tax in India, anyway everybody pays indirect tax (GST). I had a good laugh when he said that. If you are looking for funny podcast on the subject of economics, this podcast is highly recommended. Everybody is supposed to pay indirect tax, but do they really pay?

Please stop peddling your political agenda. Disappointed to see that Your reporting of CAA is amateurish & full of falsehood. You cheer the anarchy & hooligans. Why are you combining CAA & NRC? Looks like you have a sinister agenda. People like you are a disservice to society. It is a pity India is is in such a sorry state because of Leftist, secular urban naxals. Shame on you & your ilk. STOP PEDDLING SUCH BLATANT FALSEHOOD😡

Amit’s podcast is one of the few to have explored different topics and issues acros a wide spectrum, from history to contemporary, from arts to science. I really like the choice of disucssion topics and some of the speakers brought in.
As far as political topics are concerned, i feel the discussion is biased often only painting one side of the story. You dont have to sing praises about the current regime, but there is a reason why they have been voted to power back to back. If he can balance this part, I think it sould be great podcast for all.

Insightful podcast, recent episodes are too long

This was one of my favourite podcasts. But the recent episodes are too long, and not focused.
I recommend you listen to the first 50-100 episodes and skip the recent ones.

In my mind, the best Indian podcast out there

Amit's show is, in my mind, the best Indian podcast out there. Informative, engaging, funny at times, challenging and such good quality guests. He's able to get under a topic so well so even people who know nothing about the topic take something away. 2 hours feels like half an hour, really. Fabulous.
PS: The fact that there are several 1-star ratings by butthurt folks who have stopped believing in facts, shows that this show is excellent!

The Seen and The Unseen has been a constant mind tickler and a superb source of information. I’ve been following the podcast for about two years now and have come across brilliant analogies which have challenged my views and sometimes forced me to reconsider my opinions.
Thanks Amit sir. You’ve made this show brilliant, and one I eagerly wait for every week.

Educative but biased

Amit Verma gets some great guests on this show. I especially liked listening to Tony Joseph (Early Indians), Shruti Rajagoplan (Judiciary) etc. But Amit Verma himself is a bit of letdown at times due to his biases. I say take the positive facts from this show and try to forget the leftist negative opinion/rant that is aired sometimes

Simply awesome...!!

To anyone who thinks this show is anti-BJP, they most probably haven’t even heard it.
The host is most definitely biased, he has no qualms hiding his biases about being a libertarian. It’s quite funny that a libertarian is considered to be opposite to the only ‘right’ wing party in Indian politics.
Though populist might be a better label at this point.

Amazing. Don’t ever stop.

It is incredibly smart so I can understand why others would think this was anti-BJP. Very balanced and I would recommend it for people who want to think for themselves.

Biased show, is anti BJP no doubt

Seems the host is trying to propagate only anti BJP sentiment. Why there is never a so called right winger called on the show. Shows which are not related to politics are great and informative indeed. I don’t doubt the ability, but the intent for sure.

A bit biased

Where was this podcast all my life! Kudos to the team who put up this show, and to the gifted host and as always - interesting guests. I always leave every episode learning something new.
Feedback to the host to check out the the Australian “Money” podcast which talks about the economics of sleep, funerals and all the way to immigration - is able to bring in an audio quote or two from experts.
The personal references unsurprisingly make the podcast personal and adds a warm touch it. It also helps to have a pleasing voice with no effort to stretch a natural accent.
This is one podcast I will ask all my Fintech entrepreneur friends and my parents to listen to.
Please let us how to reach out to you over email as well for more feedback and topic suggestions. Especially would like episodes on RBI notifications “garamagaram”. I think your team would do a fantastic job to make them more accessible and bridge the gap between understanding regulations, the real reasons behind them with nuggets from experts and the industry.
All the best, keep em coming.
