This was apparently written in the 1830's in the USA. The book starts with a brief history of the discovery of tobacco by Europeans and its introduction into Western world commerce. The middle part describes some gruesome experiments on animals showing that "tobacco oil" is undeniably acutely toxic, but its chronic effects were not investigated.
