As one from Chennai, India , it is a must read paper everyday. Wish It’s reports about India are covered by unbiased reporters. It is extremely difficult to cover India’s multi diversity. But NYT has the infrastructure and expertise to do it.

Clarity, customisation & ease of use
The NYT news app is a reader’s delight with sections clearly demarcated and the headlines that can be captured and understood in a single glance. The customisation the app offers in terms of topics, regions and other sections is also wonderful. The app is smooth with very rare bugs and the option to listen to the articles makes a reader want to spend the entire day on the app. My only grudge is the difficulty to change payment modes as some Indian credit cards are not accepted making it a pain to keep using someone else’s card for re subscription.

NYT gives out news in detail and in very interesting formats. Even though I don’t live in the US, I still learn a lot after reading NYT. The in depth research and factual reporting is what makes it an interesting read, everyday. Developers are gonna develop, whether anyone wants or not. Whether it makes the app bad.
More powerful phones should make everything faster, but as soon new hardware is release developers make the app more bloated so that it makes it even slower. After all it is just a newspaper what ‘features’ does one require. Has broad sheet changed in the past 100 years?
Update requires ios 16 minimum. So unless you have latest phone, you are locked out. Elitist, did I hear.
Now it has become so slow that it takes forever for ‘updating to latest news’. Earlier it was instant or in the background.

This is not a news app. It’s basically Yik Yak (the college Reddit opinion app from 2013-14) parading as journalism. I got no news from it. Only bad and misleading headlines as push notifications

Buggy
I love the puzzles they have and wanted to try those on app. Guess what? The app keeps getting refreshed mid-way and either all the progress is lost or the chance is lost!
Web version is much better. Uninstalling this.
I recommend you to go with hybrid app ( Flutter or React native should be great). I can help if required.

Great content. Horrible app.
I wish I could pay them. But the app is horrendous. It’s as if they hired some school kids to develop it.
1. The subscription prices shown in the website and the app are different.
2. Can’t read articles as soon as you unsubscribe, even if you have a valid subscription remaining. But in website you can read the articles as long as you have a valid subscription.
3. No additional features in app, like long press to save article, dark mode, swipe gestures, etc.
4. App tends to reload frequently, despite no other apps running.
5. App will crash if you try to restore subscription. I simply unsubscribed and resorted to reading just from their website.

I subscribed to the app because I actually enjoyed it more than the paper, but its quality has just plummeted in recent months. There’s no way to customise the sections you see; the app’s ‘For You’ section has no connection to what I actually want to read; and it’s virtually impossible to find sections like the daily briefing. Please stop making mindless changes and restore this app to its clean usable version. Stop trying to make me read the things *you* want me to read.

Bug in puzzles is very frustrating
I’m not a subscriber, but a one-time play option is still provided on Tiles. However each time I go to play it, the app has some kind of internal refresh that resets most of the games I’m playing and with Tiles it blocks my access. The frequent refresh makes every game get stuck or reset. Very frustrating

Did monkeys write this app? Terrible user experience for subscribers! After I bought a subscription in Safari they promised me reading was better in the app and I'd be auto logged in. False! Now that I've installed the app it's asking me if I want to subscribe... and it’s full of ads! Used Apple login because I trust Apple. Not these dimwits. Restore subscription option in settings causes app to crash.

Great news but a buggy app
The New York Times has always been a great source of news and information. But the app is a whole other story.
Plenty of problems including:
1. a jumpy home screen. I scroll and at certain point it just jumps to a different section
2. Bug after playing spelling bee. Always returns a 404 after I complete it
3. Crossword takes ages to load. Much longer than 4K videos take to start playing

I have an active NYT subscription but for some reason the app just refused to refresh/show new content from January 28 onwards. At first I thought it had something to do with my internet connection but every other app is running just as usual and the NYT app is the only one acting up. Horrible reading experience because of ads
As a subscriber, seeing ads on articles itself is annoying as most other newspapers don’t show ads for paid subscribers.
But how the ads are loaded is just annoying and I lose position of what I was reading and have to manually adjust every single time an ad loads. How is this is an acceptable experience in 2020? Even a free news app doesn’t lose place of what is being read when loading ads.
Also, no dark mode.
