The new revamped app is a disaster
I’ve been a reader of the newspaper for decades and a user of your app for years. I have been consistently giving the app 5 stars for every upgrade. But this latest “revamp” makes no sense. There’s so much wrong with it that I can’t even begin to list them. Is it possible to get the old one back?
I had with the review above a couple of weeks ago. Now the The World Ahead has dropped and it’s so hard to read. There is no easy way to navigate through the magazine. You need to keep going back to the contents page. Why have you done this? Please improve this urgently.

"Great Content, but Syncing Issues Need Fixing

However, there's a small hiccup when it comes to saving and syncing articles across different devices. If you’re like me, you might check out news casually on your phone during a busy day but prefer to dive into detailed articles on your laptop or iPad during your downtime. Right now, saved articles don’t always sync across devices, which means you might end up trying to remember what you saved or doing a casual search to find it again.
If The Economist could fix this syncing issue, it would make the app even better. But overall, it’s still a great choice for deep, quality journalism.

Content exceptional, the app? Not so much
Weekly content in the economist is exceptional. However the app itself is terrible. It freezes and crashes unpredictably. Further it sometimes pauses a good 5-7 seconds before loading an article or image, making you click it again, only to have an additional click take you to whatever mystery link lies behind the second click when the article does finally open. ( from where it will take you another 5-7 seconds to get back to the article)

Synching the app across various platforms
The app for both iPad and iPhone is simple and intuitive. However, one of the functionalities that is dearly missed is that they need to be synched under one username. For instance, articles read on the iPhone should also be ‘ticked’ in iPad or even the website.
It allows the reader an indication of what they have read and what’s next to be read.

Like Economist Content. Two suggestions -
1. At times I see ignorant bias towards developing nations like India. Would like Economist reporters / writers to spend time in India, understand country, culture, developmental initiatives and challenges and progress made. I am all for critical evaluation but Bias puts one off at times. And I would like to continue reading Economist. 😊
2. With information overload times we live in, brevity and concise is key. I strongly believe quality of article summarisation can significantly improve to give quality gist of the article and educate the reader completely on subject. One can always go through full article if and where one wishes.

An Educator
With the Economist newspaper it’s an education in process; the way it unfolds the global scene through in-depth analysis and commentary is remarkable. And moreover it touches all spheres of human affairs; truly everything under the sun.
Personally I was always fascinated by the world of newspapers and the Economist remains my favourite; a radio buff from my childhood days, and hooked on to the Beeb, I find the audio version and the podcasts of the esteemed paper unbeatable.

The journalistic content is amazing. The world view one can get from reading The Economist is unbeatable. However, one problem with the app is that if you are reading across multiple devices, then then the app does not synchronise reading lists, likes, etc.

Quality journalism and timely content and Oped. However although they offer 4500 annual subscription from their website, it doesn’t go through. One is stuck with the very expensive 1000 per month Apple Pay subdivision.

Great app! Some suggestions:
I absolutely love this app, in particular the morning briefing (personally preferred it being called espresso briefing).
I do have a few things I would suggest adding to this app considering how the legacy app always asks to switch over to this one. Having the 15 second fast forward/rewind and little excerpts about every article right under the headline (without actually opening the article) in the weekly edition is something very useful in the legacy app. These two little features are incredibly useful in my opinion. I can prioritise which article I would want to listen to first by reading the excerpt, and quickly rewind in case I miss something, instead of having to use the slider or open the article altogether. I don’t mean to imply that the headlines given for each are not good, they are great. It’s just nice to have a sneak peek of what the article is about.

Only newspaper I read, but please remove the ads
Online click-farming and political polarization has left most news sources a cortisol-fueling mess. The Economist has managed to hold out through this, with them still being a weekly publication, while remaining relatively non-partisan. They have encouraged me to pick up reading the news again, since I abandoned it in 2017. The mobile app is also one of the best and most intuitive I've found among other news apps. I like the native-feeling UI, and the audio articles is the cherry on top.
However, seeing ads on something I pay for looks quite bad in this age. The first thing I look for in an app is a payment method to get rid of the ads, and I am disappointed I can't get do that here. Still worse is the fact that the ads seem to be provided by a third-party, with all the user-tracking and profiling that that entails. But the Economist seems to be set in their ways, and I had to install an ad-blocker on my phone because of this app.

Family Susbcription
The AppStore page of this app says it supports Family Sharing, and I am unable to actually share it. The apple customer support directs us to the Economist customer support, it being a third-party app, while the Economist CS asks us to address the concern with Apple.
Really a frustrating experience!

The Economist does an outstanding analysis of events and issues shaping the world. However , it is much less charitable to emerging economies which are wrestling with problems from climate change to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Positive leads from other emerging economies - after news , views , and analysis , should also have some positive action taken elsewhere. This would make the picture in the frame completely.
Otherwise, it will remain outstanding at theorising; and it’s
analysis sterile, in a world that requires global solutions from the pandemic to global warming.

The kind of language used in many articles are not up to the mark what is expected from an international magazine like The Economist. Also, many times the analytics are not fully supported with reliable data.

Economist has by far the best content quality in all media I have consumed including many paid such as wsj, BI, etc.

Feedback on economist subscription bought from iTunes
I love the economist and have a subscription I bought from iTunes from my apple phone. However , frustratingly, every few months the Economist app malfunctions asking me to renew a perfectly fine ongoing subscription. The problem self heals in a couple of days but this poor quality of service which denies me the ability to read the articles while I am paying for my subscription ever so often is beyond me - something I definitely don’t expect from The Economist.
If I ever end my subscription in the next few months this would rate as the #1 reason for doing so. #2 reason would be that the same app doesn’t open on my Mac laptop - so I can’t continue reading the article on my phone to my Mac. If you are looking for top 2 reasons why I may exit economist - these are the top 2.

Perhaps the best magazine that covers the widest range of topics from Politics to Entertainment; well researched and exhaustive on any topic covered. The app features are great. Brilliant dark mode and with the latest feature to listen in an article keeps me updated on a regular basis!

A great media service!
Reliable and detailed reporting written in an easy readable style, makes looking forward to the weekly edition. The daily e-mail service from the Economist is also welcome. Audio facility allows one to listen to a report while driving or just when you don’t feel like reading.

Annotation feature?
Dear Economist team, this is a brilliant App. I love the daily selection and the news bites.
What i sorely miss is the ability to make side notes, highlight some text, underline, circle numbers, or just draw diagrams on the margins using Apple Pencil - you see when i read your brilliant stories i like to add some notes on the side, ideas, connections, questions which i can save along with the article and can come back to later.....as i used to do in your print version. Keeps crashing on the iPad

The new app has made some things worse.
The font gradation has always been useless but has been made worse by a reduction in the size of the minimum font. The default option has always been the most readable and is worsened by the reduction. Inability to change the orientation has also reduced readability. Overall, extremely disappointing and frustrating.

Love the Economist App
I shuddered at the thought of not being able to hold the physical paper in my hand every Monday morning. Covid put that fear to rest. Switching to the app has been much less painful than I had imagined and I am actually enjoying it now. The App is well built, good UI/UX and extremely intuitive to use. It’s not been more than a week or so of using it but so far, so good.

What an ordeal!
I subscribed via iTunes and am unable to sign in though my phone . Tried contacting their team and all the calls have been futile. Some on them said you wouldn’t have a crn number if you’ve signed up via iTunes. I am still unable to sign up! It just ruins the entire experience . Their customer service team has been trained to not understand the problem. Beyond a point one feels why did I sign up!? I think prayers would only help me now .

Don’t buy subscription via iPhone or any iOS device.
Nightmarish experience. Purchased 3 month digital subscription on January 30th 2019 via the iOS app on my iPhone.
Cannot access app on iPad nor access the economist website despite having an active digital subscription.
Contacted Economist support multiple times, but their poor support had no clue and asked me to contact Apple. Apple in turn have asked me to contact the Developer. Just terrible. Traumatic.

I like the idea of daily curated articles, finish your daily ones and you can finish the week’S print edition before the next one come out.
Although I have to depend on my browser for the daily blog articles, would be great if that were added to the app too.
