Released in 1970, Afternoon Ragas is often credited as the record responsible for the breakout success of sitar legend Nikhil Banerjee. The melodies are understated and arranged to highlight Banerjee's exquisite performance style, which reveals itself to be technically meticulous and emotive in its simplicity, and an ubiquitous tambura sets the stage with Kanai Dutta wielding his tabla magic. Banerjee was best known for his meend work on the sitar, and selections like "Bhimpalasri Slow Rupak Tal" demonstrate his incredible control with each note sliding and melting into the next.
