The last mixtape YoungBoy released before beginning his 2016 prison sentence, Before I Go Reloaded highlights the Baton Rouge rapper’s emotionally raw storytelling over pensive, quintessentially Southern beats. “When my grandma died, I jumped off the porch and started hustling,” he says on “So Long”, a document of the hardships that led him to a breakthrough moment. On “Dream”, the beat drops out and explodes back in to emphasise YoungBoy’s lyrics about those gone too soon.
