Pop-friendly Kiwi reggae crew keep the vibe slow and steady, warm and deep
Set to snappy hooks and slinking rhythms, Logan Bell’s soul-cultivated vocal smoothness completes the package on Katchafire’s amiable fourth album. The Hamilton, New Zealand ensemble mix it up, milking low-slung organ and horns on “Irie,” while Bell waxes both romantic (“One Stop Shop”) and religious (“Seek Ye”). Highlights like the infectious “Sweet As” evoke leisurely summer days. Yet even when the band pick up the pace on “Groove Again” and “Serious,” that added perkiness never comes at the expense of the album’s immersive island vibes.
